About ChoralSounds Northwest
ChoralSounds Northwest (CSN) is a Burien-based mixed chorus, under the baton of Artistic Director Ryan Ellis, that offers the fun of singing traditional choral music as well as new arrangements with a decidedly theatrical style. CSN concerts are much more than typical choral concerts. Sets, costuming, lighting, choreography, and drama all combine for fun-filled shows for performers and audiences alike.
A friendly, cohesive group of dedicated musicians who are drawn together by their love of choral singing, CSN offers a musical home to singers who want to experience the fun and camaraderie of singing and performing with a professional group. CSN also offers many solo, duet, and group opportunities to our singers, including membership in our two small ensembles. VocalSounds Northwest is an auditioned ensemble designed to give more experienced singers an opportunity to sing advanced repertoire while focusing on the challenges and rewards of nuanced musical expression. The Smamblettes is an auditioned women’s ensemble that perform an array of beautiful and fun arrangements fo the female voice giving singers a different type of performance experience.
CSN’s 2016-2017 season kicks off in December with WinterLight, a holiday show evoking the warmth from a glowing ember on a frigid night. In February, we will have some fun celebrating award-winning music with our annual Cabaret and silent auction, entitled On the Red Carpet. In May, we will be honoring and remembering mothers on Mother’s Day with A Song for Mom.
Other Season Events
In addition to the mainstage concerts in Burien, CSN is sometimes asked to perform at various other functions within the greater Seattle area, including a new tradition of a performance on Memorial Day at the Greenwood Memorial Park to honor our fallen military heroes. In the past, CSN has joined with other area amateur musical organizations for performances at Seattle’s incredible Benaroya Hall. The chorus has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and in June 2001 the chorus made its first trip abroad, where it toured Italy while performing in its churches and performance halls. In the summer of 2016, many of the singers of CSN traveled to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for a concert tour of the choral-rich Baltic region.
Membership in CSN is open to all singers of high school age and older who want to sing with the chorus. Singers who decide to join CSN will be asked to sing a short excerpt from any song of their choice – with or without accompaniment – in a private session with the conductor, to help him place their voice in the chorus. Previous choral singing experience and the ability to sight-read are desired, but not required for membership. For information about auditioning for CSN, visit our CSN Auditions page.
